Sexuality

It's not as imple as gay or straight

Every day we see relationships all around us. Many people grow up in a society where your sexuality is defined as gay or straight but as you mature you begin to realise that there is so much more to sexuality than you think. Everyone is different and that is completely okay. Some people are attracted to a certain sex, some are attracted to the person without worrying about their gender, and some people aren’t attracted to anyone at all. Sexuality can be a very confusing thing to understand, especially when you are growing up but exploring your sexuality is just another important thing to add to the list of things to do as you get older.

Lucky for us, people are finally starting to accept sexuality diversity leaving people free to express themselves no matter where they fit into the ‘sexuality rainbow’. As previously mentioned, there is more than gay and straight when it comes to sexuality. LGBTQIA stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual and gives people a chance to identify themselves in a community that understands each other.

So what do the labels in LGBTQIA actually mean?

LESBIAN: a lesbian is a homosexual female who is attracted physically as well as romantically and emotionally to other females.

GAY: gay people are male homosexuals who are attracted physically as well as romantically and emotionally to other males.

BISEXUAL: someone who is bisexual is attracted to men and women physically, romantically or emotionally.

TRANSGENDER: transgender people are those whose have been born into the body of either a male or female but feel as though they identify as the opposite gender.

QUEER: queer is a general group term for those who identify themselves as neither a straight male or straight female

INTERSEX: intersex describes people who are born neither male nor female, they are typically both.

ASEXUAL: someone who is asexual is not attracted to anyone. They have no preferred sexual partner.
