Stimulants
Stimulants speed up the communication through the central nervous system, (the brain and the spinal cord) making the individual more aroused and alert.
Depressants
Depressants slow down the communication of the central nervous system which makes the individual less alert as well as slowing down bodily functions such as breathing and heart rate.
Hallucinogen
Hallucinogen make a person see, hear, smell or feel things that are not real.
Drugs
Drugs are a substance that can change a person’s physical or mental state. Most drugs are prescribed to treat and control medical conditions however, there are some drugs that are used outside the medical field. These drugs are referred to as recreational drugs and most of these are illegal in Australia.
There are three main categories of drugs, depressants, stimulants and hallucinogens. Some drugs may fall into more than one category.
